halloween porches and cupcakes
POSTED ON Tuesday, October 13, 2009 AT 12:10 by saint cupcake
i can’t help but notice what’s going on in the holiday home decorating industry. it used to be that around christmas time (a week or two MAYBE before) people would put up a string or two of multi-colored “holiday lights”. now it seems the holiday season (and that’s ANY holiday) begins about 3 weeks before the actual holiday. proof being that my neighbors have started hanging up too-thick gobs of fake cobwebs, mini-skeletons and pumpkins are lining 3/4 or the front steps in my neighborhood. one neighbor of mine even decorated a trash can in his front yard. not the door, not the porch, just the trash can. there are what i hope to be fake legs sticking out like he just got rid of a pair. clearly not yard debris, compost, or recycling, this is hands down the creepiest halloween decoration on the block. or it could be that he just got drunk and fell in face first. perhaps i should have checked. last spring, though, another neighbor had a real half a cat on their lawn. while that was creepy and REALLY gross, it was not a decoration. i hope.
anyway, dear cupcakers, in the spirit (ha!) of not going overboard with halloween decor (we know you know it’s coming up. we won’t beat you over the head with it) we will begin OUR halloween cupcake decorations on friday 10/30 and keep on decorating til closing on 10/31. but if you wish, we will totally decorate your special order cupcakes with the aforementioned decorations. you know: candy corn, black and orange sprinkles and other halloweeney type stuff from now til then. so give us a call (503-916-9835) and order today!
saint cupcake’s summery summary
POSTED ON Friday, September 25, 2009 AT 11:32 by saint cupcake
well, to recap, we’ve had an exciting summer. our beloved sam went and joined the peace corps. we hired a gaggle of sarahs and a sassy jackie. galen and jared got married while danny and valerie are putting the final touches on their big day. we bbq’d, we karaokeed, we iced and sprinkled. we baked and donated cupcakes for all kinds of cool organizations and helped tons of portland couples on their own wedding days by providing cupcakes as the iced wedding tower.
as most of you did, we watched the michael jackson memorial kinda thinking he would pop out of the coffin at the end; when he didn’t we knew for sure we lost the king of pop. we also mourned the deaths of swayze, ed, ted, les, walter, dom, farrah, john hughes, billy mays, jon and kate’s marriage, the chai tea cupcake, crocs, duct tape at the rose parade, and most notable: the innocent image we all had of mckenzie phillips. (on a side note: omg and eeww.)
what will the fall bring? a butt load of leaves, a. and b., we’re hoping for good grades, not too much rain, great halloween pictures, more weddings, less celebrity demise, a fresh season of 30 rock, more deliveries ordered by former and current vice presidents, and a movie version of where the wild things are. oh, there is one? sweet.
now, go do your homework, sharpen your rake blades, ask the gores to call us again, and tell us what you are going to be for halloween.
afterschool special 9/8-9/13
POSTED ON Wednesday, September 02, 2009 AT 10:24 by saint cupcake
for the past 3 years, saint cupcake has offered an after school special for the first week of the new school year. you know, to ease kids back into it. to bribe them into having a “great day!” on campus. school is hard, remember? new classroom, maybe even a new school. new teacher, new friends, new shoes, itchy tights, new funny hair cut, new seating chart, new zits.
having just gone to a preschool orientation for my own kid’s first day of school ever in the history of her life, i now understand why we get so weird about our kids starting school. it’s a trip! time flies. i get that now. and for you veteran parents who have had your first-first day of school, the summer flew by. bear with us as we new off to school parents get a little weepy. SO with that said, this year’s “afterschool special” is going to be a little differn’t. we are going to honor you, too mom/dad/guardian of the back to schooler.
now, instead of 2 dot size cupcakes, a carton of milk, and a saint cupcake sticker for 3 bucks, we’ll throw in an extra dot. the extra dot is for you, mom/dad/guardian, on accounta we don’t have shots of whiskey.
*rules and regs: you must either be a student 18 years old or younger, OR a teacher k-12 to qualify. not available for to go orders. one special per kid.
now please enjoy this picture of saint cupcake’s own celebrations and events manager who wishes to remain nameless. this is her not long after the first day of school in 8th grade. you love her shirt; i just know it.
oh, liberal media. you’re so generous!

(excuse me.) thanks for the back pat and liberal spin on the shout out from msn. AND nice shot of our valentinesy cupcakes!

cupcake care 101
POSTED ON Wednesday, August 19, 2009 AT 09:23 by saint cupcake
uhmuhgud. it’s so hot. for those of you reading this from southern-er states than oregon, forgive my kvetching please. i know that y’all don’t kvetch much in the south, but bear with me. for portland, 100 degrees is hot. we are just not equipped for the triple digits. and it only gets hotter and hotter later in the day. what up with that, portland? we mostly don’t have friends with pools (though there are some nice public pools and fountains), we mostly don’t have our homes air conditioned so stores sell out of the window units and big box fans and it’s all over the news. we do have ice cold movie theaters. and rivers! we have rivers! and we have river shoes! well i don’t, but a lot of portland does. and the rivers are a little stinky around here. anyway, it’s hot and we have few ways to deal with it.
as a community service, saint cupcake would like to offer you tips on how to care for your cupcakes in these extreme conditions. certain icings (vanilla buttercream, hot fudge, lemonberry) do just fine in the heat. but poor cream cheese. as one of our taller cupcakes, the heat makes her wilt. made mostly of butter, cream cheese and sugar, it’s a heavy icing that like butter and cream cheese, can melt when left in the sun. while they will still taste delish, they’re sure to be a mess. make sure that when you walk out of here with our cupcakes, first of all, you need to hold them steady. then make sure they are in a cool spot for transport. the floor of your car? with the a/c set to “feet”, perhaps? or in the way way back of the s.u.v. in the shade. just keep them flat and keep them cool. and for the love of all things iced, don’t make saint cupcake your first stop when picking up the cakes. you don’t want to be running all over this hot town summer in the city back of your neck getting dirty and sweaty with the cupcakes panting in the back. take them straight home! put them in the fridge if you want, but take them out a few minutes before serving. room temperature is always best, unless your room’s temperature is 92 degrees.
and if you are not taking any togo, be sure to stop by our very air conditioned bakery, have a cupcake or 3 and sip on some icey iced tea. or coffee.
stay cool! K.I.T!
